The City of Winslow hired Stroh Architecture, Inc. to restore the historic Lorenzo Hubbell
Trading Post and Warehouse, which was originally built by Hubert and CD Richardson in 1917
and purchased by Lorenzo Hubbell in 1921.
This spacious building, with its pressed tin ceiling display room and hand-made trusses and
floor planks of the old trading post, became known as the home of the largest Navajo rug ever
woven and the repository of the finest pawned specimens of old-time Navajo silver and
turquoise jewelry.
The City’s goals for this restoration project were to create a catalyst for the redevelopment of
the downtown area, to demonstrate how multiple funding sources could be combined, and to
have the building serve as the western gateway to the Winslow Historic District.
The building was restored per U. S. Department of the Interior Guidelines and the stabilization
report developed by the City of Winslow in 2002, and was awarded the Governor’s Heritage
Preservation Award in 2009.
This 5,821 sq. ft. restoration project was completed in January 2009 at a construction cost of
$481,525.
